BlazBlue: Chrono Phantasma
(User scores are recalculated daily)
Being just as over the top and strange as the other BlazBlue titles, BlazBlue: Chrono Phantasma (and its subsequent enhanced release BlazBlue: Chrono Phantasma Extend) see you once again taking unique 2D sprite characters into battle with plenty of flashy action.
The bulk of content lies within the story mode of the game with around 20 hours needed to make your way through start to finish. This isn’t to say 20hrs of true gameplay though as it is heavily based around story sequences. Much of your time is also spent simply comprehending the insane story, making it par for the course in the fighting genre.
Otherwise you’ve got the usual enhancements and roster changes that you expect between game iterations. You’ve got a total of 28 characters once all DLC and Extend characters are accounted for, 19 of which you’ve seen before in the previous game (BlazBlue Continuum Shift Extend). Even these returning characters though feature new designs for their drawn character sprites along with some fresh musical themes.
As you would expect these new characters are as complex and intriguing as the returning cast with their own beautiful animations that makes each attack look crisp and fluid.
For mechanics a new Overdrive system replaces the Gold Bursts of previous games while Guard Primers have been taken out. Overdrive allows you to quickly switch the advantage to yourself with a large boost to damage and altering your base moveset. Guard Crush has also been replaced with Crush Trigger which at the cost of Heat players can crush the guard of defensive opponents and ensures stalling is not an ideal tactic.
Once combined with all the offensive options you’ll find most opponents thus take the aggressive path with moves like the air dash, high jump, double jump and many others. New players need not be turned off by this wealth of options though with one of the best tutorials available in any fighting game that will happily hold your hand through the basic and intermediate mechanics.
- Enjoy new characters and recreated favourites.
- Make use of the new Overdrive system to turn the tides of battle.
- Rewards aggressive tactics.
- Large story with 3 arcs that merge into one.
- Originally for PS3 with Extend for other platforms.
