Exploring the dark side of life Depression Quest is a tale contained within over 40,000 words of everyday experiences and encounters with a darker tone attached. Your goal is to make it to one of the several endings which are based on how you’ve managed your depression throughout the game.
Whether you’ve been impacted by depression at some point in your life or not Depression Quest ensures you’ll have the feelings of the real thing, with great descriptive story telling that gives you a real sense of dread as you go about the seemingly basic decisions at hand. Ultimately, you’ll leave the game feeling enlightened although sad at the events that have transpired.
Playing as an interactive fiction game, gameplay revolves around your decisions and the impact that these have on your character and status. Relying on a mountain of text along with atmospheric music and various still images players will go through a daily life routine with multiple branching choices available to players regarding their actions. These choices can number as high as 5 and can change based on your current status such as medication, therapy and how deep your depression currently is.
A mechanic used heavily in these decision trees is crossed out options which often represent the most logical option (such as confiding in some one) but aren’t available to be selected. This small touch does a great job of representing what you would often wish you could do but simply can’t action.
Depression Quest has something for everyone along the depression spectrum. Maybe you’ve had depression before or are currently experiencing it and are interested to discover you’re not alone in your feelings or perhaps you’ve never experienced it before and want an insight into what it entails.
