Dragon’s Dogma is an action RPG developed by Capcom for the Xbox 360 and PS3. The game shares many similarities to Skyrim and the Devil May Cry series. An enhanced version titled Dragon’s Dogma: Dark Arisen was launched a year later and eventually came to Windows in 2016.
Dragon’s Dogma combines a huge open fantasy world with good old hack and slash action to create an epic adventure that also incorporates some horror elements.
Just like other action role playing games players can choose from a variety of classes which alter the skills and fighting style of your character dramatically. There are a total of 9 different vocations to choose from, while some of them follow common archetypes (Warrior, Mage, Assassin) Dragon’s Dogma adds its own uniqueness with a few interesting professions such as the Strider and Magic Archer.
If you get bored of going on long journeys by yourself then you’ll love the pawn system available in Dragon’s Dogma which helps you build up a party of travellers with minimal effort. Players can have three party members at any given time and can be issued basic instructions to give some strategic options in combat.
This pawn system is tied in with social features allowing players to borrow characters from their friends to help them on their journey (and it doesn’t even require a constant internet connection). The pawns help add some life to the game world by providing story details, hints and other game information during your adventure.
The real area that Dragon’s Dogma shines in though is the combat which is always a fun experience thanks to the grab action that players can utilise. This allows players to attach themselves to enemies to attack weak points (imagine jumping onto a dragon in Skyrim).
Dragon’s Dogma promises a long main story line with plenty of side quests that totals well over 100 hours. NPCs are also a plenty to give the game that thriving realistic world feel. With plenty of depth the game will please all action RPG fans and still manages to be accessible for newer players to the genre.
