Starbound launched its Early Access beta in December of 2013 through the Steam platform. The game was highly anticipated before release and It wasn't long before the game cemented itself into the top 10 games on Steam based on current player count.

The game offers a Terraria like experience with players exploring procedurally generated worlds in a 2D fashion. Starbound takes the genre into an entirely new level though by taking place over an entire universe. Players are no longer limited to a single world with the option to pack up their belongings and jump to an entirely new planet that promises a different experience to the last.

In addition to exploring players also have the opportunity to choose a unique race, craft, fight and much more. This entire experience is only made more fun by the drop in multiplayer that lets you team up with friends.

The list of games like Starbound below focuses on providing other games in the sandbox genre with a mixture of 2D and 3D games. Most of the games here also offer the same opportunity to explore multiple planets.
