Lifeless Planet involves the exploration of rocky planet with a few basic platform and puzzle features thrown in. Available for Windows, Mac and Xbox One your lifeless surroundings have a surprisingly hidden secret.

Set on a distant planet that feels very Mars-like the game follows an astronaut after mission failure leaves them stranded without contact to their team. This failure is made all the more mysterious by the fact that previous investigation of the planet suggested it was buzzing with lifeforms but now it is completely void of life.

One thing is found on the planet though and something that nobody expected, an abandoned Soviet Union science outpost. This raises a number of questions from when did they get here? Did life ever exist here? What happened here? And are you alone on this planet? While finding answers to these questions players will also experience flashbacks to Earth as madness and isolation take hold.

Gameplay is fairly straightforward in the Lifeless Planet which is mostly about exploring linear locations, solving a small handful of puzzles and platforming across the barren landscape. To achieve this players are equipped with a fairly limited jet pack and a robotic arm which blend together in the wit based puzzles.

While this all sounds good on the surface some of the design in Lifeless Planet makes it feel like a missed opportunity. Most notably is the aforementioned linear locations which with a tad more open elements could have been a real enjoyment.

Instead you’ll find too much backtracking which in the bleak game world is not ideal. It’s not so much the bleak design is bad, it captures the loneliness of the situation perfectly but seeing the same location over and over reduces this atmosphere.

Lifeless Planet falls short of what could have been but still has appeal for those that love the genre, those on the fence though are best off giving it a miss.

Summary:

  • Explore a lifeless planet that originally had life.
  • Find the secret behind the Soviet research facility and the planet.
  • Use your jet pack and robotic arm to assist with puzzles and platforming.
  • A good selection of environments to experience.
  • Play on your computer or Xbox One.
