Lunacraft is part of the growing number of smartphone games that draw inspiration from Minecraft and takes the genre into the future for free on your iOS device. The game has been reviewed over 40,000 times on the iTunes app store and holds an average rating of 4.5 stars.

In the story mode you’ll attempt to explore an unknown moon and eventually colonise it. Alternatively players can focus entirely on building with the creative mode. Each new game is randomly generated to ensure no two games are the same experience which of course provides near endless replay value. One neat feature in particular is the varying colours of the sky, while a small feature it really does make each world extra unique.

When starting a new world, you can set a number of parameters to help shape your world which can either increase or decrease the overall difficulty. This includes the ability to alter tree cover, terrain roughness and cave frequency. An important part of the success of Lunacraft is no doubt in its well-designed interface which even on smaller iOS devices manages to not feel overwhelming or crowded while still providing all the necessary information.

So what else can you expect to run into during your Lunacraft journey?  You will encounter a number of different aliens, be able to explore in any direction (without limits), collect dozens of different building materials, create alien devices and more.

As you advance in Lunacraft you’ll have to upgrade a variety of equipment pieces to allow you to  mine the moon’s resources at a faster rate while also improving your defences against the alien species by upgrading your helmet, battery and jet pack.

Lunacraft definitely has many Minecraft features under its hood but mixes it with its own ideas and a futuristic environment that allows it to stand on its own two feet as an impressive iOS sandbox survival game.

  • Minecraft in a futuristic setting.
  • Upgrade your equipment and space suit to survive.
  • Large variety of alien species to encounter.
  • Free to play.
  • The ability to control terrain details when you create a new world.
