Taking the popular Metal Gear Solid franchise and combining it with open world elements is Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain, a first for the franchise.

For those confused how Metal Gear Solid V: Ground Zeroes fits into this game it acts simple as the prologue to the more complete game, The Phantom Pain. Set after the Ground Zeroes game events the Militaires Sans Frontieres has been destroyed with Big Boss falling into a deep coma. Waking up 9 years later (1984) to a Cipher assassin attempting to kill him at which point the story takes off with the unearthing of a Cipher plot to develop new models of Metal Gears.

Playing as Big Boss under the name of Punished Venom Snake this edition to the franchise is more open world than the games before it. Gameplay is still stealth orientated though with players sneaking around the world in an attempt to remain undetected.

This approach is strongly encouraged and this title provides all the necessary equipment to achieve this such as tranquillisers and all sorts of equipment to hide your location or confuse enemies. A robust day-night cycle can also be used to analyse troop movements to plan an attack with extreme detail. For those seeking more aggressive routes though you won’t be short of destructive firearms either.

As an expansive game players are also given the tools to trek across this landscape. Whether it be on foot, horse back, car or even tank this mostly desert themed world is at your fingertips. If you find yourself in a sticky situation a number of AI companions can be called to action.

Enemy AI is particular impressive and will put up quite the fight. and adjust to your tactics in future missions, with more aggressive players finding an armed to the teeth security force. This is quite possibly the best addition to freedom with the way players can choose the order of these missions unlike more linear past titles.

Metal Gear has always been an impressive franchise and the addition of open world and refinement of the foundations have seen the result being the best game yet.

Summary:

  • The meat of Metal Gear Solid V after the prologue (Ground Zeroes)
  • Introduces more open world elements into the Metal Gear franchise.
  • Real consequences for your actions with enemies gearing up to counter aggressive players.
  • Approach each mission multiple ways.
  • Massive range of deadly weapons, stealth equipment and AI companions.
