If you want a 2D side scrolling game like MapleStory that you can play in your browser then you’ll find that Neosaurs meets your criteria. The game is set in a fantasy universe where Neosaurs live deep under the earth and have been awakened to help battle against a new evil threat.

In the game you take control of your own dinosaur like creature (known as a Neosaur) and explore a fairly large but generic game world while completing the usual quests, gaining levels, entering instanced dungeons, finding equipment and boosting your skills.

Your Neosaur can pursue one of three class options when they reach level 10. Options include the high damage dealing Rex that uses fire skills, the earth based Cera that has high defensive stats and Ptera that uses wind and water elements to fight enemies at range and heal allies.

Gameplay is fairly standard and in line with what you would expect from an MMO experience with the focus largely revolving around quests given to the player by NPCs. Most of these quests are designed to help you make progress towards the core gameplay though which are the instanced dungeons scattered around the game world. These dungeons come with increasing difficulty levels and can be tackled solo or with friends (recommendations are provided before entering). After each dungeon you’ll be scored on how you went and get a chance at a powerful item.

One of the unique feature of Neosaurs is the skill system. Once you have used a skill enough times you’ll be presented with the opportunity to level it up in town to increase its power. The required number of uses before each level up slowly increases with each successive level. This system works well in Neosaurs due to the limited number of skills but does feel more and more empty as you advance into the game.

Neosaurs is very reminiscent of MapleStory but it has the benefit of being playable in your browser. It’s still no replacement for a downloadable game though.

  • A browser based 2D side scrolling adventure.
  • Create your own dinosaur (Neosaur).
  • Three different classes to choose from.
  • Level up your skills as you use them more.
  • Find and earn the rarest items from difficult dungeons.
