Quern – Undying Thoughts offers a story of mystery and unique puzzles as you attempt to unlock the story of Quern’s past after becoming trapped on the island.

Serving as a first person puzzle adventure game Quern challenges players with a long journey filled with ever increasing complex puzzles which slowly reveal the mystery beneath. A common theme in these puzzles is also reusable mechanics that give the game greater connection as opposed to the individual puzzles of most games. In addition players will be treated to strong visuals with a beautiful island scenery that is also highly varied.

The opening game and setting is very reminiscent of Myst with players sent to an unknown island with limited idea how they got there or how they intend to escape. Eventually as players become comfortable with their surroundings you’ll began to tackle the dozens locked doors and puzzles that stand between you and your escape.

To assist whoever was last on the island has left clues and scribbles about what was uncovered via their journal which serves as a guide from area to area. Most of these areas are contained around a central hub village near your starting location which features grand (and strange) architecture. Just like the games that have come before it everything is familiar but also strangely foreign at the same time.

The primary game mechanic of puzzles is well executed with most puzzles being solvable in a logical fashion. You’ll only encounter a small handful of puzzles that don’t make sense or have loose ties to the adventure component that make it near impossible to link together. The growth and pace of new ideas and mechanics in the puzzles themselves is particularly well done, ensuring a new challenge most of the time.

Summary:

  • Explore an unknown island and find your escape.
  • Solve increasingly difficult puzzles that build on foundations of past puzzles.
  • A strange an island world mixed between human and alien.
  • First person puzzle adventure title.
  • For Windows, Mac and Linux.
