The Age of Decadence takes a different path in with a post-apocalyptic Roman like setting. It draws inspiration from the likes of the classic Fallout games and another of other classical turn based role playing games.

Selling itself on depth of the years gone by The Age of Decadence opts for a brutal level of combat difficultly and actively encourages you avoid confrontations. With a skill list that includes things like streetwise, traps, impersonate, etiquette, steal, lockpick and sneak you’ll find yourself well armed to achieve this. The game also supports this with multiple quest solutions and decision orientated dialogue trees.

As a Roman themed adventure The Age of Decadence has plenty of political influences on the storyline while also mixing in historical elements (although its mostly fiction). Players explore a game world ravaged by an ancient war where dark magical powers destroyed all combatants, leaving a glorious Empire in ruin.

Your slate for this adventure starts from one of eight backgrounds with their own starting allegiances to factions, alternatively you can start completely blank for the real role playing experience. In addition to choosing this background players are offered some basic visual customisation and set their starting statistics (Strength, Dexterity, Constitution, Perception, Intelligence, Charisma) which flow through to starting skill levels and other modifiers.

Character growth is not through traditional levels with skill points gained from quests and enemies which can then be spent on skills which are split into combat and non-combat skills. During your adventure you’ll also improve your alchemy and crafting skills.

While combat is generally best avoided players that build specifically for it can do well within the game world. Weapon options align with your selected skills and stats with various weapons having their own strengths in fights. Unfortunately combat is a solo affair with players only controlling their own character even though NPC fighters will join from time to time.

The Age of Decadence can be brutally difficult without the proper planning so it’s best left to those that jump at the option to min-max plan their character.

  • Explore a post-apocalyptic Roman theme.
  • A game that guides your hand away from combat.
  • Pick your background, stats and skills.
  • Engage in alchemy and crafting to improve your gear.
  • No sitting on the fence, choose your character design and follow it through.
