Tomb Raider is an action focused adventure that will have you playing Lara Croft as she attempts to survive the harsh wilderness she finds herself stranded in.

Players join Lara as she becomes shipwrecked on Yamatai, a remote island near Japan. The game is intended to be portrayed as Lara’s first ever adventure which is illustrated early on as she struggles with the taking of her first life. Lara isn’t the only survivor from her party on the island although she is separated from them early on and spends much of her time trying to find them.

Lara will face her fair share of threats with the island being inhabited by the Solarii Brotherhood who is a cult made up of criminals, mercenaries and other shipwrecked survivors who are all fairly ruthless.

While the first hour or so of gameplay is extremely linear (serving as an extended tutorial) once its complete players have an amazing amout of freedom to enjoy. Part of this freedom involves tracking down the seven tombs hidden around the island which come with some very impressive rewards.

Gameplay is done through a third person perspective with an emphasis on the survival and exploration mechanics that the game has to offer. There is no shortage of weapons and items for Lara Croft to use in her adventure which players slowly salvage and upgrade as they advance.

Most notably Lara is able to use her bow and arrow for silent and stealth based headshot kills. Quick time events also make up a decent portion of the game especially when using stealth to take down enemies. As you progress your skills will slowly increase through a RPG like system which converts experience into abilities and benefits for Lara.

Tomb Raider has plenty to love for long-time fans of the series but was also clearly designed with newcomers in mind.

Summary:

  • Explore the origins of Lara Croft.
  • Large open world to explore that is as dangerous as it is breath taking.
  • Gain experience and level up your abilities.
  • Salvage what you can for new gear and upgrades.
  • Perfect for fans and new players to the franchise.
