Wurm Online is a sandbox style MMORPG that has a creative focus allowing you to create your own adventure. You can play Wurm Online with a basic account for free but to remove some restrictions you will have to commit to a subscription based premium account. The game also has a stand alone version released on Steam in 2015 called Wurm Unlimited.

Fans of Minecraft will be pleased to know that Markus Persson himself worked on the game so there is definitely a Minecraft influence present (Wurm Online was his project before Minecraft). Wurm Online separates itself from other MMORPGs with its unique gameplay that lets you create your own home in the game world.

In Wurm Online you are given total control over the game world. This means that you can completely change the landscape of the game with the resources that you collect. Resources include wood from trees, ores from mines and more advanced resources by combining elements together. The game is also void of predesigned quest systems allowing the players to ultimately choose the direction and story of the game world.

Lack of quests works great in Wurm Online because it frees you up to enjoy all the other features that the game packs in. You can create your own cave, build a house atop that mountain, participate in PvP combat, level up a large range of skills and even create your own farm.

Thanks to this range of options you can choose to live a peaceful existence or take a more active role and attempt to take over other player controlled kingdoms.

Wurm Online offers something unique in MMORPG scene with its open ended and sandbox focused experience. The game also proves to be accessible with a reasonably sized download and smaller system requirements. If you’ve ever thought that Minecraft would make for a great MMORPG than you’ll love Wurm Online.

  • Endless possibilities within the sandbox game world.
  • Live peacefully or battle it out in PvP combat.
  • Lots of skills to level up and equipment to improve.
  • Collect resources from the land and turn them into a new home, farm or tools.
  • Enough free to play content to get you hooked.

I have been trying to play this game for the last 2 days and love the gameplay features. Unfortunately, you die very easily and it’s very hard to find a place to build. When you do manage to find a place to build, you get killed and have to start back at spawn. There are no ingame maps to help you find your way back, so you have to start all over again. I finally got frustrated and gave up. If it wasn’t for the difficulty in getting around the map then I would definitely be able to get addicted to this game.
