Idleon Research Guide – Priority & Observation Locations

Last Updated on August 28, 2026 by Samuel Franklin

This Idleon research guide recommends the best research grid priority order and the location of all unlockable observations. This World 7 skill has powerful account wide bonuses and unlocks new mechanics but this needs to be balanced with maximising long term research experience gain.

Research Basics

Research is a World 7 skill where players gain levels to unlock research grid bonuses. Research experience is gained from observing landmarks in past worlds by passing a random number generator check. Once unlocked players can use one of three research objects for a different effect within the research grid. Initially only one research object can be placed on an observation but increases to two at level 40 and three at level 70.

Object Type Effect / Strategy Sources
idleon-research-magnifying-glassMagnifying Glass When placed on an observation, this lens will give you Research EXP!

These are the source of research experience gain and placed on the highest observation currently unlocked to maximise the benefit.

idleon-research-optical-monocleOptical Monocle When placed on an observation, this lens will give insight for that observation, which levels it up over time!

Insight levels will eventually increase the base experience of an observation (N8) and provide an overall research experience boost (O8). Use these to level your highest level observations to level 2 or 3 before placing a magnifying glass and then level unused observations evenly to buff O8 research upgrade.

  • L8 Research Grid upgrade
idleon-research-kaleidoscopeKaleidoscope When placed on an observation, all adjacent lenses will be % more powerful!

Adjacent requires the Kaleidoscope to be above/below or left/right of the target object and applies to magnifying glasses and optical monocles. Always buff your magnifying glasses with these but it can also be used to level insight faster.

  • M9 Research Grid upgrade
  • Limited Time Event Shop

idleon-research-new-shapesFrom level 20 onwards different research grid shapes are unlocked that provide a multiplier to any research grid squares underneath the shape. These shapes can be moved with the ‘Adjust Shapes’ icon in the bottom left of the research skill menu.

Research Progression Guide (Priority/Tier List)

I recommend this research grid tier list to optimise research EXP Gain early before unlocking other game mechanics. I also recommend upgrading L7 (AFK Research) with two points early if you don’t keep Idleon open often as research EXP is severely reduced if Idleon is not open.

  1. K7 (2 points) – Initial research experience.
  2. J6 (1 point) – Unlocks Minehead on Boomy Mine map as the third challenge adds an extra Research Magnifier.
  3. K8 (1 point) – To unlock K9.
  4. K9 (4 points) – Strong research EXP multiplier.
  5. J8 (1 point) – Unlocks tiny cogs, these are critical to levelling Clover Shrine for base research experience after trading Neon Coral at the Dancing Coral NPC.
  6. K10 (1 point) – Gives extra research points every 10 levels and progress towards L11.
  7. L10 (1 point) – Small increase to observation unlock chance but primarily to unlock L11.
  8. L11 (1 point) – Provides a pity mechanic to unlocking new observations.
  9. M10 (1 point) – Kaleidoscopes are strong multipliers to other objects. This point is needed to reach M9 and then is maxed later.
  10. M9 (4 points) – Unlocks Kaleidoscopes to boost other objects. Level this based on how many Kaleidoscopes you can fit in useful locations (depends on observation unlock luck) but eventually max this.
  11. M10 (2 points) – Boosts the effect of Kaleidoscopes further now that they are unlocked.
  12. J5/J4/J3 (1 point each) – Unlocks Glimbo trade mechanic but primarily to reach J3 which unlocks the Sushi Station from Jellofish Fields (delay this purchase if you haven’t reached the map yet). Early Sushi Station upgrades include 2x Research EXP, extra observation rolls, Research AFK gains and a Magnifier which can be unlocked easily and also starts this time based mechanic.
  13. L8 (2 points) – Unlocks two monocles to buff research EXP over the long term
  14. M8 (1 points) – Improves monocle speed but primarily to unlock the powerful insight research upgrades of N8/O8.
  15. N8 (3 points) – This multiplies your strongest observations after increasing the insight level to 2 or 3 before placing your magnifying glass on them. The Idleon Research Optimizer is an incredibly valuable tool for min-max players to check the ideal insight level order.
  16. O8 (4 points) – Provides longer term Research EXP scaling from every insight level you acquire.

These best research upgrades above are also priority for research shapes. After this foundation your choices will depend on your account preferences and progress from these recommended paths (all research nodes are listed on the wiki). If you’re unsure I have listed these paths in my approximate recommended order to consider them:

  1. Arctis Path – If you do not have the Doot pet for World 5 Divinity then N4 will activate Arctis on all characters. For Doot owners this is a lower priority as it provides a small research node multiplier and 20% drop rate. I recommend pathing J5/K5/L5/L4/M4 towards this research node.
  2. Daily Boosts PathK5/L5 have a daily mechanic for masterclass cost reduction and Spelunking to help finish these mechanics that are valuable for 1 point investments to start the accumulation. Purchase J5 to unlock these options as that also unlocks Glimbo and a coin multiplier.
  3. Extra Game Mechanics Path – Unlocks new Sailing (G7), Gaming (H8), Equinox (G8), Farming mechanics (I8), Cooking Mastery (K3), Royal Guardian Buffs (L3) and Sigil upgrades (I6) but benefits from these mechanics need advanced progress in these skills already. Consider your own account progression but I recommend unlocking them in the order listed here based on the power they provide. Some also have grid nodes around the main unlock to consider for extra boosts.
  4. Legend Talents PathK6/L6/M6/M5 increase the maximum level of particular World 7 Legend Talents. The respective options are: (K6) Yellow VI-X, (L6) Red II-IV & VI-VII, (M6) Brown I-III & IX-X, (M5) Green I-IV & VIII. I recommend Yellow as the strongest option with the other choices up to your account preferences.
  5. Button Path – The Button from the Mantaray Map deep into World 7 has useful multiplier bonuses including Research EXP, Minehead Currency, Sushi Bucks and Spelunking POW. Players must reach the map and test their account progression so the value from G6/F6 will vary based on your account. Consider at least one point in G6 to slowly skip the harder challenges then add points to F6 to your preference.
  6. Minehead Path – Pushing the Minehead mechanic is possible with J6/I5/H5/G5/G4 which speeds up the time to unlock these bonuses. Maxing J6 is particularly strong as this base rate can be multiplied by Minehead upgrades and an atom collider bonus. Minehead has some strong bonuses but these are mostly early in progression.
  7. Sushi Station Path – Pushing Sushi gains with J3/I3 to speed up progress here to reach account bonuses sooner. These upgrades are not required to complete Sushi but you do need at least one point in J3 to to unlock the mechanic which is worth acquiring as already noted earlier.

  1. I have unlocked 5 observations, but i can’t find more. When I travel to a world where there should be one, I can’t find any.

    • Hi Yakha,

The observations available are limited by your current research level and they won’t appear until certain levels.

Do you have any question marks in the observation section of the research menu? Hover over those to see what you have available. If there are no question marks right now they will appear as you increase your research level

      Thanks
