Minecraft is the ultimate sandbox adventure and has grown from humble beginnings to become one of the biggest and most loved games of all time. Not only has it seen great success but it’s also inspired countless games like it.

Minecraft was primarily developed by Notch Persson during the early game development stages but is now developed by his game studio, Mojang. The game was first released in 2009 but didn’t see a full release until late 2011. Minecraft is the proud holder of countless game awards and as of early 2013 had reached 9 million sales (PC version).

The gameplay on offer in Minecraft is simple enough, players can freely destroy, collect and place a variety of blocks including things like dirt and stone along with rarer blocks such as gold or diamond. All of this construction takes place in a randomly generated 3D game world so no two game worlds are ever the same experience.

The building aspect isn’t the only thing on offer though, gamers can also experience a survival game mode where players must also take into account hunger and health as they attempt to survive in a harsh game environment (complete with zombies, spiders and the deadly exploding creeper).

The main goal while in survival mode is to battle the Ender Dragon although players can take as much time as they want to achieve this objective or ignore it completely due to the sandbox design of the game.

The real strength of Minecraft extends past its built in features though, with the game having a huge mod community that regularly creates new modifications and custom maps to enhance or completely change the gameplay in Minecraft. Popular mods include the battle royale style Hunger Games maps and story based adventure challenge maps created by other users.

Minecraft is truly a game where you can do it all, be it building, adventure or something completely unintended through mods or maps (such as PvP arenas, adventure maps and games inspired by The Hunger Games).

  • The most popular sandbox game.
  • Plenty of mods available to add or completely change gameplay.
  • Explore, build and survive, you decide how to play.
  • Constant updates and changes keep the game fresh and exciting.
  • Huge community to discuss and share your Minecraft experiences.
