Think offline MapleStory, and you’ve got Dust: An Elysian Tale. A game that tells the story of Dust, a warrior who has awoken in a forest without any memory of who is he and how he got there.
Joining you on the journey to discover your origin is the sentient mythical Blade of Ahrah and its guardian, a Nimbat named Fidget. Your journey starts at the town of Aurora that has recently succumbed to the presence of monsters.
In addition to your main quests players will encounter various other characters who will give you additional, smaller quests that may or may not be related to the game’s main storyline. For example, a particular quest has you collecting sheep. You also gain new skills and abilities as you adventure onwards, such as scaling mountains or crawling (yes you need to be taught how to crawl).
New monsters present themselves as you progress from map to map, each with their own special abilities like flying or even combustion which requires you to adjust your playstyle accordingly. This is the real gem of the game with fluent controls with combat that is always responsive to your inputs.
With the aid of the Blade of Ahrah and Fidget, you slowly learn more about your own history with each new piece of information compelling you forward to discover more about who you are, where you come from, and where you ought to go next.
Dust: An Elysian Tale also includes mini challenges that are optional and can be found through careful exploration. These challenges are time-based dungeons that you have to clear as efficiently as possible, killing off monsters and collecting objects. At the end of the dungeon, you will be rated on a scale of stars, and awarded with an item.
One thing that stands out in the game as unique is the merchant system, you can purchase materials from the merchant but, first, you have to sell one of that material, which you are to gather from hunting monsters, to the merchant so that he can stock it. There are travelling merchants posted randomly, and some are in town. All travelling merchants stock the same goods, so it doesn’t matter which merchant you sell your materials to.
