Zoo Tycoon 2 builds on the gameplay of the original game and offers a solid tycoon experience that will have players creating animal exhibits, maintaining the park finances, keeping the guests happy and everything else that comes with running your own zoo.

The game was published by Microsoft Game Studios and released in late 2005 (with 4 expansion packs released in future years). Zoo Tycoon 2 is also available on Nintendo DS (note that this review only covers the PC and Mac versions).

Gameplay in Zoo Tycoon 2 is exactly what you would expect from a tycoon/business simulation game and is packed full of detail and polish which make it a very enjoyable experience. There is plenty of gameplay to explore in the game thanks to the three different game modes on offer; Freeform, Campaign and Challenge.

You will be spending most of your game time in the Campaign mode as it is the best way to learn the mechanics of the Zoo Tycoon 2 world. In Campaign you’ll assume the role of a zoo owner as they attempt to make a profit and become the best zoo in the country.

While Freeform is exactly as it sounds and gives players unlimited money to create their dream zoo. In this Freeform mode you are given an empty plot of land along with all the potential animals and buildings to create something magnificent. While Challenge is for those zoo owners that want to push their limits with a variety of challenges to complete on a limited budget.

For animal fans you can focus on providing the perfect enclosures for your animals while filling your zoo with the rarest (or your favourite) animals. While the tycoon fan (especially those that loved the Roller Coaster Tycoon series) can focus on building the visitor attractions, finances and staff. This blend gives the game appeal to a wide audience and has been a key to its success since release.

Summary:

  • Build exhibits for your favourite animals.
  • 4 expansion packs to experience which means lots of content!
  • Focus on the animals or your guests.
  • Realistic animals to enjoy.
  • Older game makes it an affordable option.
