RuneScape

RuneScape has long been a popular free to play MMORPG. It is widely regarded as one of the most popular browser based games around and has been constantly evolving since its humble beginnings over a decade ago.

With hundreds of millions of accounts there are plenty of players to join you in this fantasy MMORPG. RuneScape offers all the features you would expect from a modern game with quests, skills, trade, chat, mini-games, NPCs and co-operative based adventures.

RuneScape takes place in the magical world known as Gielinor and is split into a large number of regions for players to explore and complete quests in. Just like you would expect from an MMORPG each region is unique with its own monsters and story.

In RuneScape players start out in a standard tutorial area where the game introduces you to all the RuneScape features and from there you’ll enter the real game world. Since the game doesn’t have a linear storyline you can set your own goals and explore this land as you see fit. Want to complete quests? Go for it. Would you rather craft some new gear? Or maybe battle others in PvP? You can do all that and more with the huge amount of freedom that RuneScape offers right from the start.

RuneScape has over two dozen skills for you to explore (with membership required to use all of them). You’ll increase your proficiency with each skill as you use it (chopping trees for example improves your woodcutting while starting a fire  improves your fire skill).

The max skill level for these skills is 99 with players receiving a cape of accomplishment when they achieve the max level, which makes this a common goal for most players. Because players can choose which skills to focus on you have plenty of depth that ensures you and your friend can have completely different skills levelled up and thus approach to gameplay.

Combat in RuneScape is similar to a turn based game with players selecting targets and taking it in turns to deal and receive damage. In combat players can also use summoned creatures, potions and abilities for maximum damage. Players have the option to use melee, ranged or magic based attacks in combat which all level up separately as you use them.

RuneScape’s large player base speaks for itself, the game stands above other browser MMORPG alternatives and with constant updates new content is always right around the corner.

Summary:

  • The biggest free MMORPG.
  • Experience plenty of content on a free membership.
  • Plenty of unique skills to train as you please.
  • Hundreds of quests spread out across the vast world.
  • Large community so there are plenty of opportunities to make friends.

  1. It’s not really a browser based game. You have to download the game client to play.
