  • Limited replay opportunities – Little balance/variety of strategies

War is not a good situation for anyone to be in, especially those that are orphaned because of the ongoing conflicts. This harsh reality is one that St. Orchint’s Orphanage explores with a simple free to play browser title.

In St. Orchint’s Orphanage players operate their own orphanage during war time. Your balancing act in this case requires players to feed the military with a certain number of children (by putting them through military school for 20 days) while sending out the other orphans into a variety of labour jobs to generate income.

By keeping the military happy with a steady stream of new soldiers for the war you’ll be able to stay in operation and support the ever growing number of children as the war prolongs, players must also meet ever increasing demands for funds as well. Each child needs daily food to ensure they do not starve and may also require medical attention from time to time.

The game starts innocently enough with players first goal to provide 10 military schooled children in 30 days and $5,000 worth of funds to the military in 30 days. Players start with 100 children and will need to put them to work quickly to ensure the orphanage doesn’t run at a loss. The four available jobs includes the coal mines, chimney sweep. paper boy and sweatshop which bring in varied amounts of income each day although have different lethality and disease risk ratings to contend with.

Disease can be removed from children automatically if the player has ample medicine available, with sick children unable to work you’ll want to keep a decent stock available. As the days roll on players will receive a number of newspaper headlines from The Westport Independent newspaper, these report on current activities in the war which can provide a new batch of orphans or increase the price of food and medicine. Additionally players will also get the odd heartbreaking letter from the orphans themselves which won’t be spoiled here.

The dark thought provoking atmosphere of St. Orchint’s Orphanage makes the game similar to Papers, Please in design. As a free title it is of course no where near as deep but that should not stop you from having a few attempts at this title.
